Subratica is a 2D platformer where you play as a rat trying to escape from a submarine. This is the first collaborative game project I worked on and inspired me to gain more knowledge in production. After this project I have gained proficiency in Unreal blueprinting, basics of VFX, understanding of SCRUM procedures and basics of UI programming.

Interactable objects

My main contribution to this project was creating interactable objects like pressure plates, timer buttons and pushable objects. I have created functionality for these objects using Unreal Engine’s blueprints. Both pressure plates and buttons activate/deactivate a response object which was in this game either a gate or electricity. I also implemented the functionality to grab and push objects in the level.

I was one of the driving forces in this project when it comes to team organization and project direction. The biggest contribution was giving structure to our backlog and confirming the pipeline with our lecturers. I also hosted some of the sprint plannings and started attending production lectures given by fellow production student to improve production in our team. Thanks to that I suggested a bug report pipeline which improved bug fixing in our team.

In the beginning of this project, I set myself a goal to create VFX with both visuals and functionality since I was interested in what are the VFX creation possibilities in Unreal Engine. Therefore, I created two visual effects – poison death trap and jump smoke cloud. To improve the player experience I also decided to create force feedback for these actions.

In collaboration with one of the artists in my team I helped to design layout and scene for the Main Menu. I have done this using the Unreal Engine’s widget component and discussing the font choice with the artist. Working on this inspired me to delve more into UI programming in following projects.
